Making Small Spaces Elegant

Downsizing is the trend during the pandemic. Due to lack of housing and a competitive housing market, more people are opting to rent, and most apartments being rented are one bedroom. Older couples, with the kids now adults, are opting to downsize, selling larger houses in a sellers market, and buying smaller homes to avoid the upkeep of 2,500+ square feet. If you’re finding yourself in a smaller space, there are a number of way to make it just as elegant as a modern mansion.

Elegant lighting

Keep Lighting at the Forefront

Lighting a smaller space correctly gives it the feel of a relaxing retreat. Small spaces that don’t have as much window space create even more opportunity. Sconces and table lamps help illuminate a room, while giving it an understated appeal. I personally can’t stand the fake overhead lighting in some apartments and will opt to use lamps instead, and never turn the built in lights on once!

If you are lucky with a lot of windows, take advantage of them. Natural light in a smaller room helps the room feel more dynamic. It gives the room a natural feel (obviously), and creates a natural, elegant glow during the day.

Elegant rug

Fill a Room with a Rug

Small rugs don’t work in small spaces. Instead opt for a rug that fits under all the furniture in the room, or a wall to wall rug that covers the entire floor. A nice, bold color on the rug that helps accent the room’s colors will give a touch of class to any dining room (picture) or living space.

Arrange Your Furniture Accordingly

Have a narrow living room? Place the couch against the wall so that you have more open space to move about. I don’t love large, sectional couches in small living rooms, unless you’re looking to create a division in the room. We’ve used sectionals to split a smaller living room in two, and had a cute reading nook in the open space. Otherwise, opt for a smaller couch with a few love-seats around the space.

Make Your Furniture Functional

Furniture in a small space should serve a purpose, other than an accent piece. Open end tables don’t offer much other than taking up space. An end table with drawer, on the other hand, is a great place for knickknacks. The last thing you want in a small space is a bunch of little things scattered about. A few shelves to display items offer understated elegance. In the bedroom, look for benches that offer storage for extra blankets. Utilizing every piece of furniture will allow any room to breathe.
